A note on the .exe downloads
EnglishTestStore's offline test packs are distributed as .exe files, which only run on Windows. macOS, Chromebook, and most school tablet users will need to stick to the online tests and PDF downloads.
What is EnglishTestStore?
EnglishTestStore (englishteststore.net) is a free English test practice site that has been online since 2005. It bundles six major exam tracks in one place: ESL general English, TOEFL, TOEIC, IELTS, VSTEP, and a U.S. grade 6-12 track.
Test types are organized by skill:
- Grammar tests — by level and topic, from basic to advanced
- Listening tests — leveled, designed to be done in sequence
- Reading tests — various topics, vocabulary-building
- Speaking tests — pronunciation and general speaking practice (TOEFL, TOEIC, IELTS)
- Vocabulary tests — including targeted IELTS 5.5 / 6.5 / 8.0 / 9.0 word lists
- Full English contests — timed, ranked, for self-assessment
The site also offers downloadable PDFs and .exe test packs for offline use, plus video lessons and a grammar question bank. The interface is utilitarian and the design is dated, but the content library is unusually broad for a free resource.
How teachers use it
EnglishTestStore works best for these specific things:
- Multi-exam vocabulary drilling: the 5000-word and 2500-word IELTS / SAT lists are ready to assign as homework or warm-ups.
- End-of-lesson listening checks: leveled listening tests fit a 10-15 minute classroom window with instant scoring.
- Low-tech and absent students: the PDF and .exe downloads let students without reliable internet still complete assigned work offline.
- Placement diagnostics: a 20-minute contest test gives a rough CEFR / level estimate before you commit to a course track.
- TOEFL / TOEIC drilling at scale: large banks of topic-organized questions let teachers rotate fresh material without repeating themselves.
- VSTEP prep: dedicated VSTEP B1, B2, C1 tests follow the official Vietnamese standardized test format — useful for teachers working with Vietnamese university candidates.
Is it worth your time?
Yes — if you need a single free site that covers multiple exam tracks and CEFR levels. EnglishTestStore's strength is breadth, not depth in any one exam. For pure IELTS or pure TOEFL prep, a dedicated platform will go further. As a free, no-signup, multi-purpose practice bank, it is genuinely useful.
The combination of online tests + PDF / .exe downloads is rare for a free site, and makes it a strong fit for classrooms with mixed device access. The dated interface and the .exe-only offline packs (which will not run on macOS or Chromebook) are the main caveats.
Honest recommendation: use EnglishTestStore as a primary free resource for vocabulary drilling, listening checks, and quick diagnostics. Pair it with one of the alternatives below for polished full-exam simulation (IELTS Podcast), better-designed UIs (BBC Learning English), or structured paid lesson plans (ESL Brains, Teach-This).
The honest pros and cons
What works
- Six exam tracks in one place ESL, TOEFL, TOEIC, IELTS, VSTEP, grade 6-12 — no other free site covers this range.
- 100% free, no signup No account, no email, no trial. Students use it anonymously.
- Self-grading with instant feedback Students get scored on the spot, no teacher prep needed.
- Offline downloads PDFs and .exe test packs for classrooms with poor internet.
- Targeted vocabulary lists Pre-built IELTS 5.5 / 6.5 / 8.0 / 9.0 and SAT word banks.
- Full contest tests Timed, ranked tests for self-assessment and level diagnostics.
What doesn't
- Dated interface 2005-era design, cluttered navigation, not mobile-optimized.
- .exe downloads are Windows-only Won't run on macOS, Chromebook, or most school tablets.
- Limited speaking depth Speaking tests are basic compared to dedicated apps like ELSA.
- No progress tracking Scores aren't saved between sessions — you track externally.
- Ads on the site Banner ads present; verify content is from the site, not an ad.
- Less polished than paid options Full IELTS or TOEFL simulation is shallower than official prep.
